Deism is a theology most often associated with the Enlightenment, and more specifically with some of the American Founding Fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson. In a nutshell, it denies the activist, interventionist God of the Scriptures and substitutes "Nature's God" - a God who created all things and then left them to function according to a set of natural rules and laws. It is a theology of "God as watchmaker."
